A meeting for UN NGOs and World Media

Opening the day-long proceedings the editor of "The Planetary Interest, of which Kofi Annan spoke, Kennedy Graham, will offer perspectives on current developments in "The Planetary Interest, the UN and World Law" to UN delegates, media, NGOs and students in a conference link from the UN University in Belgium where he is Senior Fellow.

The Rev. Vernon Nichols of the UN NGO Committee on Disarmament will introduce a follow-up discussion with Ambassador David Malone, President of the International Peace Academy, Steve Sawyer, Greenpeace International and Hazel Henderson, economist and co-author of "The United Nations: Planning and policy Alternatives."

A noon panel on "World Media and the War" will feature remarks from Tony Jenkins, President of the United Nations Correspondents' Association, Reese Schonfeld founding president of CNN, and media commentator Danny Schechter of Globalvision. Bill Maher has been invited to comment.

Lunch break - 1.00PM - 2.00pm

US presidential candidate Rep. Dennis Kucinich will open the afternoon session on videoconference from Washington, D.C. discussing his bill to establish a US Department of Peace. He will be invited to put his proposal into a global context.

The afternoon panel, "Force without Firepower: Protecting the Peace" will also include presentations from Joseph Cirincione, Director of Non-Proliferation Project at Carnegie Endowment, Felicity Hill of UNIFEM, International lawyer Peter Weiss, IALANA, Saul Mendlovitz Rutgers Law Professor, Lucy Webster of ECAAR, Mike Kronisch of World Federalists, and Michael Ratner of the Center for Constitutional Rights.

Videoconference contribution has been invited from New Zealand Prime Minster Helen Clark.

The producer will be Kevin Sanders of Oneworld Radio which, together with Radio for Peace International, will broadcast the proceedings worldwide. The events will be taped for TV and posted for broadcast on this website with continuing weblog discussion and development.
